How to Build a Topical Map Without Creating Hundreds of Pages

A useful topical map covers the meaningful decisions and questions around a subject while aggressively merging overlapping intent.

Define the central subject

Write the central subject and audience in one sentence. Every planned page should either explain a meaningful part of that subject or attract a closely related visitor.

Map the ecosystem

Map problems, terminology, mechanisms, comparisons, alternatives, outcomes, audiences, objections, upstream decisions and downstream decisions.

Create pillars and children

Group the map into a small number of pillars. Under each, create child destinations only when the user outcome is distinct enough to justify a page.

Add one-degree-away topics

After the core is covered, add topics one conceptual step away—complementary methods, tools, decisions or mechanisms that strengthen the site's authority without changing its identity.

Set a stopping rule

Stop when new ideas mostly duplicate existing intent or require increasingly weak relevance. Search Console can later reveal which adjacent areas deserve expansion based on real impressions.
