Search Intent Explained: The Four Useful Categories
Search intent is the outcome a person is trying to achieve. Matching it is more important than repeating the query.

Informational intent
Informational searches seek an answer, process, explanation or understanding. The best destination may be a short definition, a detailed guide, a calculator, a video or another format depending on the task.
Commercial investigation
Commercial-investigation searches compare options before a decision. Queries such as “best,” “review,” “alternatives” and “versus” often fall here, although modifiers are only clues.
Transactional intent
Transactional searches indicate a user wants to complete an action such as buying, signing up or booking. Product and service pages tend to be stronger fits than educational essays.
Navigational intent
Navigational searches are primarily trying to reach a particular brand, website or page. Competing against the intended destination is usually not productive.
Mixed intent
Many SERPs are mixed. When Google ranks several page types, the query may support multiple interpretations. Decide whether your page can satisfy a meaningful portion of that intent without becoming unfocused.
