Search in the target market
Check results using the country, language and device context that matters to your audience when possible. Search results can vary, so avoid assuming one screenshot represents every user.
Record the top results
Record the top results, titles and page types. For important keywords, also note forums, videos, shopping results, featured snippets and other SERP features.
Classify site and page types
Classify each result as a specialist publisher, large media site, vendor, marketplace, community, tool or other relevant type. Then classify the destination itself: guide, category, product, comparison, forum thread and so on.
Look beyond the first result
A single dominant brand does not define the whole SERP. Look for the weakest and most relevant result, recurring niche sites and whether different content formats coexist.
Use the findings
Use the pattern to shape your content format and decide whether the query fits your site. SERP composition is evidence about intent, competition and the type of page you need to create.
