Keyword Difficulty: What It Means and What It Misses

What KD tries to estimate
Keyword difficulty is generally an estimate of how hard it may be to rank for a query. Different tools calculate it differently, so a score of 20 in one product is not necessarily equivalent to 20 in another.
Why scores differ
Some systems emphasize backlink profiles; others incorporate additional SERP signals. Methodology matters because it determines what the number can and cannot tell you.
What KD misses
A single score may miss intent mismatch, weak individual pages, the presence of forums, topical relevance, content format and the practical quality gap between what ranks and what you could publish.
When to use it
KD is useful for filtering very large lists and comparing opportunities inside the same tool. It is much less useful as an automatic publish/skip decision.
A better workflow
Use difficulty as the first pass, then inspect the SERP, confirm intent, evaluate page-level competition, check business relevance and decide whether the keyword deserves a distinct page.
